The real reason your last pitch didn't land

The Elevare Edge · Issue 19 · July 14, 2026

You built the business case.

The data is airtight. You walk into the room ready.

Slide two goes up. You start walking through the methodology. Slide four, you're explaining the assumptions behind the model. By slide six, you're deep in a variance you feel like you have to justify, and you can feel it happening.

The MD across the table glances at their phone. Someone starts flipping ahead in the deck instead of listening to you. The energy that was in the room when you walked in is gone.

You still land the number. You still make the ask. But it comes almost as an afterthought at the end, tacked onto a wall of detail nobody asked for, and the room responds the way rooms respond to status updates: a few questions, a "let's take this offline," a decision that quietly slips to next quarter.

Here's the part most leaders miss: that outcome is rarely a data problem. It's a structure and persuasion problem. Somewhere between the spreadsheet and the meeting, the story got lost, the stakes never landed, and the ask itself got buried under the math.

I see this constantly in my coaching work with VPs, Directors, and MDs across financial services. Sharp operators. Strong data. And a pitch that walks the room through every step of the thinking instead of leading with the one thing they're actually there to decide.

There's a reason for that gap. Most executives lean almost entirely on logic to make their case. Aristotle mapped this out nearly 2,400 years ago in what's still called the Rhetorical Triangle: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Credibility, emotional stakes, and logic. Most leaders are fluent in one of the three and never learned the other two.

I put together a short guide that breaks down the exact system I use with coaching clients to close that gap: how to structure the narrative, tighten the individual points, and make sure the argument actually persuades, not just informs.

It's built around three tools working together, not three more frameworks to juggle.
